Titles

  • Sentence case (Capitalize the first letter of the first word and the first letter of any proper nouns).
  • Limit to one line.
  • Forego ending punctuation unless title is a question.
  • Try to front load core of message into the first few words.

Buttons

Value Selector lists

  • Sentence case (Capitalize the first letter of the first word and the first letter of any proper nouns).
  • Limit text to one or two words.

General best practices

  • Avoid technical jargon.
  • Try to concisely explain the situation, and explain what the user can do to resolve it.
  • In most situations avoid "you", "you're", etc. Dissolve boundaries between user and device.
  • Don't use an article before app names. For example, use "Take photos with Camera" instead of "Take photos with the Camera").
  • Apps names are displayed in title case, but individual settings or modes are displayed in lower case.
  • Use smart quotes, not plain quotes.

Forms

  • Negative buttons appear on the left, positive buttons appear on the right.
  • The generic labels are "Cancel" and "OK".

Specific terms

  • Use "tap" instead of "select", "press", etc.
  • Use "Sign in", not "Login".
  • Use "Phone", not "Device".
  • Use "Space", not "Storage".
  • Use "On / Off" for toggles in English.
  • Capitalize the first letter of "Web" unless it is part of compound word.
  • Use "Wi-Fi", not "WiFi" or "wifi".

Display of file size units

  • If less than 1 KB, display <1KB.
  • 1KB to 1,023 KB, display 536 KB.
  • 1 MB to 1,047 MB, display 2.1 MB (show one decimal place).
  • 1 GB +, display 3.3 GB (show one decimal place).
